Nate here. Ever wondered if there was going to be another epic samurai anime? Something that would drop your jaw, make you laugh, and have cute girls as an option? Well unfortunately, the optional part of my question was the main part of my answer and the samurai-ish part is a bit..."altered." I'm going to be reviewing a little anime with a BIG impact called Samurai Girls...
When you think "Samurai Girls" you think ohh, ok...this might be some sort of mix of Kenshin or Champloo, only with girls...might be mahou shoujo-ish though...actually there's no hint of Kenshin or Champloo anywhere in the anime. Instead, it mixes up feudal Japan times, with futuristic technology, and Sekirei-ish fanservice..only a bit more well drawn in the physics dept...as well as having it's own unique style of calligraphy being splashed onto the screen from time to time.. sometimes used as censors pretty cleverly, to some pretty intense fast-paced fighting scenes. Cram all of that together on a calligraphy painting scroll and you've got a Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls anime.
The hero of the story is Yagyuu, Muneakira who is a soldier for the Tokugawa clan. This anime takes place during the Tokugawa Shogunate in an alternate reality during the early 21st century. He has a friend, Sen Tokugawa, you he was assigned to protect, but during this time, two rebels, Sanada,Yukimura (if you recently been watching Sengoku Basara, forget everything you know about that character because this Yukimura is a girl,) and Gotou, Matabei came into the Tokogawa fort and kidnapped Muneakira. Later, Yukimura, Matabei, and Muneakira met up with Hanzou Hattori, Sen's loyal assistant. During this fight, a big light appeared and a mysterious little girl instantly came out of nowhere, into Muneakira's hands, thus that's how their adventure started...
The first thing you would probably notice out of watching the first episode is "wow look at the ink animation!" This really brings a uniqueness i can't really describe to the show, but it hasn't been seen in any shows I've seen besides this one, so I assume this is the first one. It reminds me the animations in Street Fighter 4. Later you'll probably be noticing the action then all of the fanservice from the girls..but then you'll be wondering...how MUCH of this anime is related to a Samurai theme? The only real thing that's linked to samurai's in this show is the scenery, everyone's ideals, oaths, and code of ethics, but if just doesn't feel like it for some reason...maybe just guys will be enjoying the fanservice to long to remember it..though all of that is just an "imo." This is one of my favorite shows and if you keep it up to the ending, you see a very powerful ending. I give it a 4.9 out of 5, just because I think it's missing some samurai spots, but it seriously is a "must watch."
