After observing the positive results from the Dota 2 tournament, The International, ESPN is looking to include this title to its list of esports news. As gamers competed for a grand prize of almost $11 million, ESPN’s live streaming services, ESPN3 and ESPN2, have gained an unprecedented viewing audience for the category of esports.
The contribution of Dota 2’s success and its impact on ESPN’s viewing channels, could not have been timed more perfectly. Following the success of ESPN’s recent partnership with Major League Gaming’s Call of Duty league (which was not broadcasted live), Dota 2’s impact may change the viewing access of future esport events covered by ESPN. Although no official announcements have been made by either ESPN or MLG, what remains undeniable is the growing hype and fandom of games like Dota 2, and their continued success in influencing the way esports is viewed by mainstream media.
