Set to launch this week in Japan, much anticipated Vita game Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment has been confirmed as getting a US release in the summer, answering the prayers of western SAO fans – though unfortunately at the cost of being a digital-only release. The news, unexpected though welcome, marks one of the rare occasions a game spin-off of a late night anime has been promptly localised – although traditionally these titles have not been all that popular even in Japan, and fewer still have actually been any good. The game will likely become a welcome distraction for fans unable to withstand the wait for Sword Art Online’s second season due in July – pre-orders for the English version of Hollow Fragment are already open.

With Captain America: the Winter Soldier out in theaters, it's safe to say that Marvel Studios has been taking the world by storm. But on April 2, two days prior, a new Marvel based anime series premiered in Japan with hopes of capturing the 6-12 male demographic. What, you may ask, is going to set this chapter of the Marvel universe apart from the animated series that came before it? Simple. Turn the Avengers into Digimon-esque collectibles and plug in a shonen flavored "Gotta Catch'em All" plot. In this strange take on the Marvel Universe, Stark Industries has developed a capsule disk system to use against the various supervillians the Avengers and company have faced throughout their lifetimes. Loki, however, gains control of this new system and uses it to capture our heroes, leaving the fate of the world in the hands of five youths with the inexplicable power to synchronize and summon their chosen Avenger. Like I said, Avengers meets Digimon. This isn't the first time Toei, the producers of Disk Wars, have created a completely different take on the Marvel Universe to sell toys to kids. After all, this is the same company who in 1978 made Spider-Man into a tokusatsu hero with his own giant robot, which would become the basis of Super Sentai giant robots that we all know as Megazords today. Yep, that happened too.
While it's doubtful that this take on the Marvel Universe will ever make it stateside, only time will tell if this will bring more youngsters into the Marvel fandom. Longtime Marvel fans are skeptical at best, but only Japan knows how their audience ticks. Perhaps its crazy premise will make it a cult hit the same way the Japanese Spider-Man is now. |
